Hi Amanda and YSP community,
We are a small (8 lot) scheme in NSW. I am the chair/secretary/treasurer of our 6-person committee (yes I realise an even number of members is not ideal but we are managing Ok despite that).
We recently had a committee meeting, at which there was discussion re us getting some roof improvements / renovation work undertaken. One committee member said that he has a drone and offered that he could fly his drone up above our roof so we could all see the condition of the roof in detail. There were a number of people who were keen for this to happy, but this was not voted on.
I am raising a question here about this, as after the meeting, it occurred to me that there may be some liability, safety and privacy issues associated with this. The intention of the committee member is to be helpful and the offer has been made to enable us to be able to see the condition of our roof in detail via the drone. However, I just want to make sure we have covered off any potential issues with a drone being used in this way.

This is the province of the Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA).
They have clear rules which, for a small, privately owned, non-money-earning flight aren’t too onerous. There are actually special ones for flying over your own property here.
Of course if your fellow committee member holds a remote pilot licence, they’ll know the rules and have the knowledge to follow them.
Short answer is: follow the rules and it’s fine.

I don’t see a problem if the committee agrees. There is no privacy issue. Your neighbour in the opposite building could have a camera trained on your bedroom window right now and they aren’t breaking any laws (scary, but true). We have this idea that we have a ‘right to privacy’ in Australia, when in fact we have no such thing.
